Ontario district director Ted Young sets the tone for the 2025 Volunteer Recognition Awards with a warm welcome. He co-hosted the event with acting Association president Hélène Nadeau.

Behind every successful branch event, advocacy campaign or membership drive, there are dedicated volunteers who make it all possible. Their leadership, creativity and commitment help grow our Association and ensure we remain a strong voice for retirement security and healthy aging across Canada.

This year’s Volunteer Recognition Awards shine a light on individuals and branches that exemplify outstanding service and collaboration. Each video highlights a nominator’s perspective on why these volunteers were chosen — and the value of their contributions.

Volunteerism Award: Terry Gunnlaugson

Nominated by Wendy Jarvin, president of the Western Manitoba Branch

Terry Gunnlaugson has spent more than five decades giving back — from national roles with professional groups to long-standing community work with the Wheat City Lions Club. His leadership with the Western Manitoba Branch is just one example of his enduring passion for volunteering and his drive to make a difference.

Collaboration Award: Jim Lystar

Nominated by Bruce Challis, president of the London Branch

As a military liaison volunteer with the London Branch, Jim Lystar has worked tirelessly to grow membership through meaningful outreach to veterans, CAF personnel and local legions. His collaborative approach has benefited not only his own branch, but also others across Ontario and beyond.

Claude Edwards Leadership Award: Shawna Murphy

Nominated by Myrene Mollison, president of the Saskatoon and Area Branch

Shawna Murphy is a driving force in advocacy and communications for the Saskatoon and Area Branch. From leading a strategic partnership with the Saskatoon Council on Aging to organizing a major provincial election town hall, Shawna has helped position our Association as a respected voice in the community.

Branch Excellence Award with Employees: Ottawa Branch

Presented by Ted Young, national board director for Ontario

With a vibrant mix of programming, advocacy and outreach, the Ottawa Branch exemplifies what a well-resourced, volunteer-powered team can achieve. In 2024, they hosted more than 50 webinars, welcomed hundreds of new members and led successful community partnerships.

Small Branch Excellence Award: North Nova Branch

Presented by Shawn McCord, belairdirect partner representative

Proving that size is no barrier to impact, the North Nova Branch continues to punch above its weight. From pulling together a last-minute town hall during a snap provincial election to recruiting new members and offering reliable support, this team is building real momentum.

Mega Recruitment Drive: Joanne Morrissey

Presented by Lynn Nasralla, belairdirect partner representative

For years, Avalon-Burin Peninsula Branch volunteer Joanne Morrissey has been a powerhouse behind our Mega Recruitment Drive, consistently bringing in new members through personal outreach and enthusiasm. For Joanne, recruiting isn’t just about numbers — it’s about building lasting connections and sharing the value of community.

Volunteers make our mission possible

Our Association wouldn’t be what it is today without the dedication of volunteers like Terry, Jim, Shawna, Joanne and the teams behind our Ottawa and North Nova branches. Their stories remind us of the power of giving back — and the community we build when we do it together.
