Federal Retirees is pleased to welcome Marilyn Best as the new advocacy program officer (APO) for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Best, with the Avalon-Burin Peninsula Branch, is one of the Association’s newest advocacy program officers. Best is looking forward to assisting the Newfoundland and Labrador branches with their advocacy initiatives!

Best recently retired from the Canada Revenue Agency Newfoundland and Labrador Tax Services Office on May 24, 2023 after 33 years with the agency. During her years there, she worked in various auditing and team leader positions. Best holds a certified professional accountant designation.

While working with the agency, Best also took an active role with the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC). She started her involvement at the branch level and served as the first female president of the St. John’s Branch. Her involvement progressed to director of the Atlantic Region for the PIPSC board, where she chaired and participated in various board committees. Best also held the distinction of being the first woman to chair the Annual General Meeting for PIPSC with over 500 delegates in attendance. She was committed to not only protecting the rights and improving working conditions of members but also highlighting the services members provide to the public.

Prior to her retirement, Best joined the National Association of Federal Retirees, seeing this as an opportunity to continue to advocate for her colleagues and community. In her new role as advocacy program officer for Newfoundland and Labrador, Best looks forward to working closely with branches to ensure Federal Retirees priorities are at the forefront.

Best was born and raised in St. John’s. She currently resides in Mount Pearl with her husband, Hubert. They have two daughters, one residing in Newfoundland and the other in Nova Scotia. Best enjoys playing racquetball and golf as well as trips to Nova Scotia to spend time with her two young grandsons. She looks forward to traveling and seeing more of the world in retirement!
