Johnson Insurance, the National Association of Federal Retirees’ MEDOC travel insurance provider, provides important updates and information for members in this letter.

April 3, 2020

Dear National Association of Federal Retirees Members,

The ever-evolving COVID-19 situation has tested our collective resilience. Now more than ever, the Johnson Insurance team prides itself on showing our commitment and dedication to your members’ safety and well-being.

Communication is key at a time like this, and with that in mind, we want to share some updates on our Travel business.

Travel Insurance has been heavily impacted by the ongoing crisis. Our call volume has increased substantially and we would like to take this time to thank Federal Retirees’ Executive, staff and members for your patience as we continue to serve your members who are reaching out and needing assistance with the following travel claims:

  1. Medical Assistance
  2. Trip Interruption / Cancellation Assistance (bringing stranded travellers home)
  3. Non-Medical Claim Opening and Travel Inquiries for other Risk Insured (members who had upcoming travel booked and can no longer take their trip)

It is estimated that our travel insurance claims will more than double as a result of the Coronavirus. Johnson trip interruption coverage has already supported thousands of MEDOC customers on their journey back to Canada and we continue to provide medical coverage for many Canadians who have not been able to return. Our team is working around the clock to ensure that we serve all of our members to the standards that they deserve and expect.

Here are some details of the past few weeks:

Claims Update from Global Excel (for RSA/Johnson overall)

  • 128% Year-Over-Year increase in claims calls, including +1600% during peak periods.
  • 109% Year-Over-Year increase in emails
  • 89% Year-Over-Year increase in incurred claims so far!
  • Non-medical claims increased 241%, primarily due to Trip cancellation. We anticipate further increases due to the extended claim submission deadlines

Johnson Medoc Service

  • March Year-Over-Year call volume increased 97%
  • Inbound Email has increased over 200%
  • March Online visits tripled vs February

While our offices remain closed to walk-in traffic so that we can do our part to promote social distancing and flatten the curve of Coronavirus our members can visit our website for updates https://www.johnson.ca/coronavirus or reach out to our team by email travelinsurance@johnson.ca.
