International Day of Older persons: A message from our president

September 28, 2020
Jean-Guy Soulière.
Association president Jean-Guy Soulière wishes all Canadians a very happy International Day of Older Persons on Oct. 1!

As we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons, we should reflect on the importance of a vibrant and healthy demographic section of the global population: older persons. We federal retirees, who are part of this group, are positive and active participants in society. And, as we navigate the current pandemic, we, especially here in Canada, have adhered to the recommendations of our medical experts and have greatly assisted in flattening the curve of reported coronavirus cases.

Unfortunately, many of us were neglected by a society that let a crisis develop in retirement residences and long-term care institutions. Thousands of our friends, colleagues and loved ones who helped to make our country one of the best in the world were forgotten and left to live in unimaginable conditions, many tragically losing their lives. On this day, let us pause to remember them, and never allow ourselves to forget the importance of protecting all Canadians and prioritizing the ability to age with dignity and in security.

Our society must encourage the active participation of its older citizens by honouring their past achievements and by continuing to value their contributions, regardless of age. Societies that respect, recognize and utilize the enormous brainpower, experience and expertise of their older population will lead us into a brighter future. It is not too late for countries to establish, as we have here in many cities, age-friendly communities, and to ensure that policies and programs consider the social determinants of a healthy society

Happy International Day of Older Persons! And, to you, younger persons who are reading this, remember that what you do today will determine what you will be when you become an older person yourself. Believe me, it happens fast! In the spirit of this special day, reach out and hug (virtually, if needed) an older person and say, “thank you for your contributions to Canada.”
