Every day, from coast to coast, volunteers are shaping the future of the National Association of Federal Retirees. Whether they’re organizing events, advancing advocacy or growing membership, these individuals and branches are at the heart of what we do.

The 2024 Volunteer Recognition Awards honour the spirit of service and collaboration that drives our success. This year’s recipients have gone above and beyond — and we’ve captured their stories in a series of short videos that showcase their impact.

Claude Edwards Leadership Award: Ian Spence

Nominated by the Fraser Valley West Branch

Since joining the Fraser Valley West Branch in 2008, Ian Spence has become a cornerstone of leadership — from regional service officer to branch president. Known for his democratic approach and strategic mindset, Ian has guided his team with clarity, optimism and respect. Through innovative communication, creative advocacy and steady mentorship, Ian continues to motivate others and strengthen our collective voice.

Collaboration Award: Helen and Larry Crabb

Nominated by Daniela Evans, president of the Central Okanagan Branch

As a volunteer duo, Helen and Larry Crabb bring energy and heart to everything they do. From leading local research partnerships to fundraising for families in need, their efforts reflect a deep commitment to community well-being. Their collaborative spirit has become a model for service within and beyond the Central Okanagan Branch.

Volunteerism Award: Line Lecours

Nominated by Lyse Gervais, vice-president of the Mauricie Branch

A dedicated advocate for seniors and community causes, Line Lecours wears many hats — volunteering with four organizations and managing eight social networks. Her visibility and influence in Mauricie help keep seniors’ issues top of mind, while her outreach consistently draws new interest to our Association.

Branch Excellence Award with Employees: Québec Branch

Presented by Léonard LeBlanc, member of the 2024 volunteer recognition committee

At the Québec Branch, it’s all about teamwork. With the support of a part-time employee, the branch’s board and volunteer team have expanded their presence at regional seniors’ tables, advancing conversations on the issues that matter most to older adults and our members.

Small Branch Excellence Award: Central Manitoba Branch

Presented by Marta Hayek, CEO of Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario

Just a few years ago, the Central Manitoba Branch faced closure. Today, thanks to renewed leadership and a dynamic board, the branch is thriving. With new preferred partners, active advocacy and fresh member outreach, they’ve built a strong foundation for the future.

Medium Branch Excellence Award: Southern Alberta Branch

Presented by Shawn McCord, belairdirect partner representative

Southern Alberta is all about connection — with general meetings, anniversary events and member-to-member outreach that brought in new faces and future volunteers. Their 2023 town halls during the provincial election created space for dialogue and strengthened their community presence.

Large Branch Excellence Award: Fraser Valley West Branch

Presented by Ted Young, national board director for Ontario

Whether it’s “meet and greets,” community partnerships or advocacy outreach, Fraser Valley West is in motion. This active branch celebrates its volunteers and keeps the lines of communication open — all while maintaining strong relationships with like-minded organizations.

Cheers to volunteers

From branch boards to advocacy teams, every volunteer helps shape our success. The 2024 recipients — Ian, Helen, Larry, Line and the teams behind our Québec, Central Manitoba, Southern Alberta and Fraser Valley West branches — reflect the heart of our mission.
