Positive and healthy aging

By 2040, one in four Canadians will be over 65. We need a national strategy that supports dignity, connection and quality of life for older adults.

Support for aging Canadians is support for all Canadians.

Why this matters

By 2040, a quarter of Canada’s population will be over 65, making older Canadians the fastest growing segment of the population. Gaps in care, housing and social policies are making it harder for older Canadians to live with dignity and choice. Nearly one in three is at risk of social isolation, and ageism continues to harm people’s health, finances and self-esteem.

Caregiving needs are also evolving. One in four Canadians is a caregiver today, and one in two will become one. Caregivers are stretched thin. They need financial relief and reliable home care to continue in their roles.

Without action, too many Canadians will age without the support they need, and our communities will feel the impact.

What we’re calling for

Within 20 years, more than 11 million Canadians will be over 65. It’s time to future-proof our policies to meet the needs of an aging population.

We’re calling on the federal government to:

  • Create a national seniors and aging strategy — with dedicated funding, clear goals, and measurable outcomes — to protect the rights of older adults and build an age-inclusive Canada.
  • Invest in age-friendly policies across health care, housing, transportation, income security, and community services, with planning that reflects the voices and real-life experiences of older Canadians.
  • Support caregivers by expanding the definition of “caregiver” and “dependent,” improving access to financial aid like a refundable Canada Caregiver Credit, and implementing a National Caregiving Strategy.
