Robert Giroux, Ottawa branch president thanks Sherry Romanado, M.P. and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Seniors for delivering opening remarks at the Branch AGM on April 30 on behalf of the Honourable Filomena Tassi.  We are also grateful to Ms. Romanado for highlighting the $5,000 in funding for Ottawa branch from the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) that was recently announced by David McGinty, M.P. The funding will be used for the Ottawa branch Financial Literacy Program for Retirees.

The Ottawa branch of the National Association of Federal Retirees (Federal Retirees) announced on April 30 it was successful in its application for a grant through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). The branch will receive $5,000 from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), which is overseeing the program. The funds will be directed towards community-based projects to increase seniors’ financial literacy.

“The Ottawa branch of Federal Retirees is very excited to be receiving its first grant under the New Horizons for Seniors Program,” said branch president Robert Giroux.” Building on the success of our pilot financial literacy initiatives, we plan to expand our program and reach even more members to help them improve their financial decision-making and reduce the very real risk of seniors’ financial abuse.”

Seniors make significant and valuable contributions to their families, communities and workplaces. Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Government of Canada continues to meet the needs of seniors by supporting initiatives that encourage them to stay active and involved in their communities. Financial abuse is one of the most common forms of elder abuse in Canada and can be difficult to recognize. The Government of Canada takes fraud against seniors very seriously and is working hard to ensure that appropriate measures are in place to protect seniors and ensure they know the risks.
