Thanks to everyone who joined us on August 22, 2025 for the summer BBQ event.
This was an advocacy event and allowed our members and their guests an opportunity to meet five of our local politicians.
Given the threat of high winds from hurricane Erin, we had an excellent turn out of members and guests. We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in Sir Sanford Fleming Park.
Here is a summary provided by our board attendees based on conversations with the politicians who attended the event, that may interest you:
Rod Wilson NDP MLA for Halifax Armdale: A member of the standing committee on health.
Subject discussed: The need for standards to be applied for long term care and the value of the new ‘transition centers’ that the province is setting up.
Response: Mr. Wilson invited the board to have representation at a healthcare related town hall that the government is hosting near the end of September.
Next Steps: The NS central branch will follow up and obtain details for this event.
Rick Burns and members enjoying the day at the Dingle.

Subject discussed: The need to protect seniors in today’s digital society and how the provincial government could play a role in this area.
Next Steps: Request was made by the board to obtain a contact person from the provincial government with expertise in cybersecurity. Once obtained, the NS central branch will work towards establishing a seminar to inform seniors how to identify and avoid SCAMS. If successful, this information will be advertised on our website as an ‘Event’.
